Embellished Authority for the Mid-Ranked Mounted Samurai

The Ko-Gashira Bajo Jingasa is a distinguished battle hat designed for mid-level samurai officers—those known as ko-gashira—who led men into combat during the final years of the Sengoku Jidai and throughout the Edo Era. These officers often held enough rank and pay to own or be entrusted with a horse, and their gear reflected both practicality and prestige.

Shaped like a low, rounded hill, the bajo jingasa (riding battle hat) earned the nickname manju-gasa, likened to the form of a manju (a round bun filled with sweet bean paste). This aerodynamic design was especially suited for mounted travel, helping reduce wind resistance during fast-paced movements on horseback. As battlefield roles evolved and armorers improved their techniques, these helmets became more refined, adorned with embellishments and decorative flourishes that elevated the ko-gashira’s status above that of common ashigaru.

Originally crafted from wood, leather, or nerigawa (lacquered rawhide), later versions adopted iron and steel construction for enhanced durability. This blend of materials provided a balance between protection and comfort, making the jingasa a trusted companion for long campaigns and ceremonial displays alike.

The Ko-Gashira Bajo Jingasa is traditionally finished in black lacquer, often adorned with the wearer’s mon (family or unit crest) in gold—both a symbol of loyalty and a functional method of identification from afar. The interior is lined with hemp cloth for breathability, and four metal rings are riveted inside to support a dual-cord fastening system. This setup ensured the jingasa stayed firmly in place beneath the chin, even at full gallop.

Our handcrafted reproduction honors these traditions while offering optional customization in paint color and mon, allowing modern warriors and collectors to display their unique heritage or martial style. Whether used in historical reenactments, on display in your collection, or worn in traditional training, the Ko-Gashira Bajo Jingasa offers authentic elegance and historical depth.
