The Yoroi Shitagi, also known as Gusoku Shitagi, is an essential traditional Japanese undershirt or jacket historically worn by samurai warriors beneath their armor. Originating in feudal Japan, this layered garment is specifically designed to enhance both comfort and protection during battle. With its samurai kimono-style design, the Yoroi Shitagi traditionally ties just below the throat, secured by a thin obi (belt) attached at the waist, providing a snug yet flexible fit beneath armor.

Historically significant, the samurai ceremonially donned their Yoroi Shitagi by inserting their left arm first, then their right, symbolizing readiness for battle. The garment was then secured at the neck and finally tied with the attached obi, traditionally from back to front, completing the preparation ritual. As the second garment worn after the fundoshi (loincloth), the Yoroi Shitagi became indispensable for both ceremonial and practical purposes.

Typically crafted with a combination of durable linen on one side and luxurious silk on the other, this reversible garment provides both ease of maintenance and optimal comfort. The silk side could be worn inward during combat, offering smoothness and reducing armor chafing, while the robust linen side faced outward, facilitating easy cleaning. Additionally, the layers of fabric functioned as an effective gambeson (arming coat), providing critical extra protection by reducing the potential damage from blades or projectile weapons that might penetrate the armor.
