Embrace the explosive legacy of the warrior with every measured charge!
The Kayaku Ire (Powder Flask) and Koyaku Ire (Small Dust Container) are essential components for the teppo tai (Japanese gunners or riflemen). In ancient times, the kayaku served as the primary flask to hold the main powder charge when a hayago (fast-loading tube) was not used. During operation, the gunpowder was poured down the teppo cannon, followed by a wadding, an iron ball, and then propelled by the karuka (ramrod). Complementing this, the smaller koyaku ire was used to hold a finer, precisely measured amount of gunpowder in a covered container.
Traditionally, both the kayaku ire and koyaku ire were crafted from lacquered or pumpkin wood and often ornately decorated. To recreate the historic display of the wrath (jar) of kayaku along with the hayago and the doran (ammo box), these flasks are indispensable accessories for your teppo setup. At Iron Mountain Armory, we manufacture these powder flasks by hand using locally sourced gourds, natural rope, and a bamboo plug equipped with a rubber ring for a secure fit. You also have the option to customize your jar with your samurai clan mon or a custom logo for a small fee. (Please note that customization may extend the processing time.)
Key Features & Benefits:
- Traditional and Natural: Handcrafted from locally sourced gourds with natural rope and bamboo plug for an authentic look.
- Versatile Use: Can be used for holding gunpowder, as a drinking vessel, or for display alongside other traditional accessories.
- Customizable Options: Add your clan mon or custom logo on the side for a personalized touch.
- Ideal Dimensions:
- Kayaku Ire: Approximately 15–20 cm high by 8–10 cm wide; holds around 220–250 grams.
- Koyaku Ire: Approximately 10–14 cm high by 6–8 cm wide; holds around 510–565 grams.
- Historical Relevance: Essential for the teppo tai, reflecting the ingenious methods used by ancient Japanese gunners.
Order Notes: Each gourd is shaped by nature and finished by human hands. Designs are etched by hand and the burned detailing is done with traditional pyrography, then hand painted. Because every gourd grows with its own curves, color tones, and textures, your piece will show natural variation in shape, grain, and artwork nuances. These differences are the mark of true craft, not defects. Exact replicas are not possible, so we cannot guarantee an identical outcome to any reference photo. What you receive is a one-of-a-kind canteen worthy of a modern warrior’s kit. Some mon or design elements may be outlined with a contrasting paint, usually gold, to enhance clarity and presence. Each outline is applied by hand to honor the artwork and sharpen the overall read.
