Elevate Your Presence with Samurai Elegance!

The Haori Sodetsukibaori (Samurai Jacket with Sleeves), also known as the Medium Haori, is an authentic traditional Japanese jacket historically worn as formal outerwear by samurai. This garment, commonly worn over a juban shitagi (under-kimono), reflects a refined style emblematic of Japan’s feudal Sengoku and Edo periods. Typically, the Haori Sodetsukibaori was worn at both casual and formal events, signifying the wearer’s status and social rank within the samurai class.

Characterized by its full sleeves and formal construction, this traditional samurai jacket is closed at the front by a delicate odoshi (lace or tie), secured through small loops on the lapels. In the Sengoku era, samurai favored simpler designs and primarily used the traditional odoshi cord for closure. During the Edo period, the jacket became more elaborate and could be secured either with the traditional odoshi cord or an alternative clasp, adapting to evolving fashion trends among samurai nobility.

Distinct from the sleeveless jinbaori (samurai vest) worn over armor, the Haori Sodetsukibaori was commonly reserved for ceremonial wear or everyday use outside of battle. Additionally, it is different from the Haori Yoroi (armored jacket) specifically designed for use with armor.

Historically, during the Edo period, an adapted haori was developed for the ashigaru (foot soldiers), featuring discreet exterior materials paired with comfortable silk lining—preserving formality while ensuring discretion and practicality.

Iron Mountain Armory meticulously handcrafts each Haori Sodetsukibaori, offering customizable options suitable for both the Sengoku and Edo samurai styles, as well as future options for Edo-period ashigaru attire. Our Sengoku-style jackets utilize authentic asa (hemp linen), traditionally tied closed with odoshi cords, while Edo-style jackets offer either an odoshi cord or a button and loop closure. The reversible option allows for an elegant silk interior, adding both comfort and style to your traditional attire.

Our historically authentic samurai jackets are featured prominently in internationally acclaimed productions, including the Netflix and Smithsonian Channel docudrama, “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan,” further highlighting their exceptional quality and authenticity.
