Lightweight Chainmail Protection – Trusted by Samurai and Ninja Alike
Kusari Katabira (chain mail armor coat) is a traditional form of tatami yoroi (folding armor) worn by samurai, their retainers, ashigaru (foot soldiers), and even shinobi / ninja during the Sengoku and Edo periods of feudal Japan. Featuring so gusari (a common Japanese chainmail pattern), this versatile armor coat was sewn directly onto asa (hemp linen), offering lightweight, flexible defense without sacrificing movement or comfort.
The term katabira refers to a traditional hemp garment or jacket. Combined with the protective kusari, the result is a practical armor coat that could be worn over or beneath a do (cuirass), kimono, or on its own. This style of armor was especially favored by traveling samurai and shinobi (aka ninja) who needed discreet yet effective protection during covert missions, street patrols, or in hostile territory. Its adjustability and low profile made it ideal for infiltration and escape—hallmarks of the ninja’s toolkit.
As noted in historical texts and references such as Ian Bottomley’s Arms and Armor of the Samurai, even machi-kata doshin and shinsengumi (samurai police officers) used this form of armor during the Edo era. Some featured detachable sleeves, allowing it to be worn like an armored vest. This tradition of flexible, field-ready armor continues in the modern era with Iron Mountain Armory’s reproduction.
Our Kusari Katabira is crafted from historically accurate materials and patterns, including durable asa and hand-linked so gusari. It’s available in multiple formats: as a vest, full jacket, or with detachable sleeves or kusari gote (chainmail sleeves). Color, texture, padding, and sizing options allow you to customize your armor to your exact needs—perfect for martial artists, samurai re-enactors, LARP or anyone embracing the shinobi / ninja spirit in training or even high level cosplay.
