Embrace the legacy of a warrior with timeless elegance!
The uwa-obi is a narrow “outer belt” or sash traditionally worn over your samurai do (cuirass) or hitatare (samurai clothing). Crafted from asa (hemp), the uwa-obi is typically 3 to 6.5 meters long—long enough to be wrapped around the warrior two or three times. The belt is centered over the do or navel, then firmly tied, with a strip of kawa (hide) added in the center to help locate the middle quickly. Primarily, the uwa-obi secures the sageo (saya cord) of the tachi, katana, wakizashi, and tanto to the waist, but it also serves as a utility belt for other weapons or accessories such as the Hayago Doran (ammo box) or Kari-Ebira (samurai arrow quiver).
Often referred to as the “second belt” or “utility belt,” the uwa-obi is worn over the sarashi (a binding cloth) which secures the do to the waist. In the Sengoku Era, it was typically made from white asa linen and could be dyed dark indigo-blue, while in the Edo Era, materials like aya (cotton) or kenpu (silk) were used. The length of the uwa-obi is determined by your waist circumference and how many times you wish to wrap it. For example, if your waist is 100 cm, you would need approximately 200 cm for one wrap (front to back and front again), 400 cm for two wraps, or 600 cm for three wraps. We recommend rounding up to the nearest measurement and adding an extra 10 cm if wearing it with samurai armor to ensure a comfortable tie.
