Embrace the agility and heritage of the warrior with every step!

Waraji (草鞋) are traditional sandals made from rice straw rope that, during the Sengoku and Edo Eras, served as the standard footwear for the common people of Japan and were also adopted by samurai for enhanced mobility. Traditionally, samurai wore their waraji with the toes slightly protruding over the front edge, which not only helped maintain traction while running, scaling walls, or fighting but also stimulated acupressure points on the toe thong to aid daily functionalities. These classic sandals are ideally paired with tabi socks or waraji-gake, enhancing both comfort and style. The design ensures the sole remains in close contact with the foot, while the back wraps securely around the Achilles tendon.

Due to their construction from straw rope, waraji tend to become brittle over time. Historically, unpaved roads allowed dirt and soil to fill the holes in the straw soles, reducing friction and prolonging the sandals’ lifespan. Although they are affordable and easy to mend, it was common for warriors to carry an extra pair for replacement when needed. To maintain your waraji, it is recommended to soak them in water for about ten minutes when they begin to dry out, which helps preserve the internal moisture and prevents damage. Additionally, applying non-slip or grip tape to the bottom can enhance traction on modern surfaces and reduce fraying.

Our straw samurai sandals are perfect for modern martial artists, reenactors, cosplay enthusiasts, LARPers, and anyone looking to add a touch of traditional Japanese style to their wardrobe. Our samurai clothing and accessories have been featured in numerous movies, TV series, and documentaries, including the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix and the Smithsonian Channel.
