Custom Maedate (Crest) with Beetle Horns by Iron Mountain Armory

Embrace your warrior’s legacy and <br>transform your kabuto with timeless elegance!

The maedate is a crest or decorative fitting mounted on the front of a kabuto (samurai helmet) that has evolved over centuries into an art form. Originally introduced during the Heian Period as part of the tanko style armor, the maedate became increasingly ornate by the Edo Period, serving as a symbol of family pride, divine protection, and individual valor. Crafted from materials such as brass and wood, these crests can represent a specific family or clan (mon), a unit, a rank, or even mythical symbols like deities, animals, dragons, or plants. Replacing a maedate is an economical and transformative way to change the appearance and personality of your existing gusoku or kabuto. They also make excellent wall displays when hung alongside your display kabuto.

At Iron Mountain Armory, we offer three distinct types of samurai maedate:

  • Simple Brass: Standard brass crests featuring elegant, simple designs.
  • Advanced Brass Crests: More intricately designed and larger brass crests for a bold statement.
  • Wooden Crests: Hand-shaped and painted wooden crests that offer a traditional, handcrafted touch.

Ordering Instructions:
Browse through our gallery images using the reference numbers provided in the top left corner of each image. Select the corresponding reference number from the drop-down menu during checkout.

  • For any standard clan mon (options 1–60), the crest will be made as a round disc (approximately 7 1/2 cm in diameter) unless otherwise specified in your order comments.
  • Please note that the “Beetle Horn” crest option is intended for replacing an existing set rather than adding to your current kabuto. This aftermarket option mounts over your existing L bracket and may require modifications to achieve a secure fit. Length options include the full length of the “horn” with approximately 2 cm mounting inside the bracket.

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Traditional Design: Faithfully reproduces the historical maedate styles that have graced samurai helmets for centuries.
  • Customizable Options: Choose from Simple Brass, Advanced Brass, or Wooden Crests, with standard or custom mon designs available.
  • Versatile Display: Ideal for updating the look of your gusoku, kabuto, or for use as a decorative wall display.
  • Historical Heritage: A unique way to honor your lineage and the legacy of the samurai warrior.

Shipping Information:
Please allow our artisans at least 1 to 2 weeks for processing and handcrafting your custom maedate, depending on option selected.

Honestly, I was underwhelmed. For the price, it did not meet my expectations. Made of thin brass. The shape was cut nicely but it was smaller than I had expected.

    • Thank you for the reply. Perhaps I was in a hurry and did not pay close attention to the written details. I was just excited they were available. However, I did create my own custom design using the one I purchased as a base and added to it. I am very please with the final results. I would be glad to supply a picture if you like.

    • Thank you for your honest review. Our crests are made to be much like the originals, which were not large, thick clumps of brass. They are made with a modest amount of brass which was needed to keep balance and symmetry. Linked below is an example of an early Edo Era maedate auctioned for €340. You can see how thin they actually where.
Regarding the size of the crest, please note on the bottom right of each image, is the size in cm. Other sizing details are noted in the product description. If you are ever uncertain about what to expect or our product description or picture is not clear, please do contact us before ordering as we do not want you to be surprised and/or underwhelmed with what you receive.
