Embrace the Shadows – Armor of the Iga Shinobi

The Iga Karuta with Kikko Tatami Yoroi is a masterful recreation of the legendary folding armor (tatami yoroi) pioneered by the renowned Edo-period katchû-shi (armor smith) Myōchin Munechika. Credited with developing the first true tatami armor between 1770 and 1779, Myōchin’s ingenious design endures today, celebrated through original examples like the historic suit safeguarded by Hatsumi Masaaki, head of the Bujinkan Dōjō.

Hand-forged by the elite Taisho-class katchû-shi of Iron Mountain Armory, each karuta (rectangular armor plate) and kikko (hexagonal armor plate) is meticulously cut, shaped, and assembled by hand. These plates are interwoven with double-linked kusari (chain mail), ensuring full coverage, exceptional flexibility, and superior resilience against slicing and puncture attacks. The (cuirass) integrates traditional tsutsu (vertical hinge connections) and odoshi (horizontal lacing), offering an unprecedented balance of protection and mobility.

This authentic tatami yoroi set includes kote (armored sleeves) reinforced with kikko plates, a karuta zukin (armored hood), and a removable brass maedate (crest) proudly displayed on the chest. Whether layered over clothing, worn beneath garments for covert operations, or displayed as an iconic symbol of ninja legacy, this armor embodies the stealth, endurance, and adaptability of the Iga shinobi.
