The Tanko Gashira Kabuto is a faithful reproduction of the earliest known iron helmet in Japanese history—dating back to the 4th century. Developed during the transitional period leading to the Heian Era, the Tankō style marked the birth of Japanese lamellar armor, which would become the foundational design for centuries of samurai armor and even influence modern body armor principles.
This Gashira-class model is carefully handcrafted by the artisans at Iron Mountain Armory to honor that legacy. The original tankō armor was worn by foot soldiers and was characterized by overlapping iron plates joined together with rivets and lacing—a design that offered a blend of protection and flexibility far ahead of its time. The Tanko Gashira Kabuto revives that form using durable steel plates, joined with visible rivets and finished with traditional cotton lacing to maintain its historical integrity.
