Gashira Tatami Karuta Yoroi is a refined form of tatami yoroi (folding armor), traditionally worn by ashigaru (foot soldiers), shinobi (ninja), and mid-ranking samurai officers throughout the Sengoku Era. The term tatami refers to the armor’s ability to fold, while karuta denotes the small square or rectangular armor plates sewn onto a fabric backing. This allowed for maximum flexibility while maintaining crucial protection across the body.

This Gashira class set includes a karuta do (cuirass), kusazuri (thigh guards), karuta sode (shoulder guards), and a karuta hachigane (armored headband). The do is further enhanced with a tate-eri (padded shoulder yoke) lined with kikko (hexagonal plating) for increased neck and upper back defense. The kote (armored sleeves) and suneate (shin guards) feature shino (splint plates) reinforced with kusari (chainmail), offering additional protection without compromising flexibility.

I’ve never owned a suit of armor before but after some research and other people’s reviews, I knew what I was getting into. Some of the stitching could probably be better but I reserve my opinion on that for now. I have always wanted a set of Tatami armor and for the quality & price, this is your best bet.

All in all though, “IMA” was very helpful and attentive to my questions, even calling me to double check measurements.

This option changes the girth size of the chest. While inhaling deeply, measure the distance AROUND the widest part of your chest. (Click through the images to see the different options.)

This option adjusts the girth size of your waist. While inhaling deeply, have an assistant wrap the tape measure around your waist at level with your navel. In the back, you want the tape measure to wrap around completely level. The tape measure should be snug, but not tight.(Click through the images to see the different options.)

Lay a comfortable shirt on a flat surface, then measure the straight distance between the two shoulder seams or enter the width you would like your shoulder distance to be. (Sizing is more for crafting reference then actual, we may reduce this by upto 15 cm)

This option effects the distance between the very top of the dō to the very bottom of your dō plate. The dō should rest where you waist and hips meet. This length adjustment will help stop your dō from pressing into your chin when sitting. Measure from where your throat meets your chest, straight down to your navel. Do not measure the contour of your chest and belly, this should be measured with a measuring stick.(Click through the images to see the different options.)

Add a long cloth belt used to hold your dō firmly in place for a more comfortable with and to hold weapons and other accessories to your waist.
