While samurai armor has a structured design, there was no universally “official” way to put it on. The method often varied between clans, regions, eras, and even armor styles. Some Daimyo (feudal lords) or Generals may have set strict guidelines for their warriors, but ultimately, it came down to personal preference and situational needs. You too can follow this tradition of individuality by using the guide below as a starting point to develop your own method of wearing yoroi.

Practical Adjustments for the Modern Warrior

Historically, samurai often adapted how they wore their armor based on their environment or tactical needs. For instance:

• Flexible Combat: The left kote (sleeve armor) was typically donned first, followed by the right, which could be removed to allow better mobility when drawing a yumi (longbow).
• Climbing or Stealth: When scaling walls or requiring full visibility, the men yoroi (face mask) might be removed, and swords were often worn vertically on the back for easier movement.
• Marshes or Boats: In waterlogged terrain or while aboard a vessel, the haidate (thigh guards) were often set aside to avoid being weighed down. Warriors in these situations might only wear the do (cuirass) and kabuto (helmet).

These adaptations highlight the practicality and ingenuity of the samurai warrior. As a Modern Warrior, consider experimenting with your yoroi to discover what feels best for you in various scenarios.
