The Guardian King – Loyal to Tokugawa, Unmatched in Honor
The Sakakibara Yasumasa Samurai Armor is a proud tribute to one of the most respected and loyal daimyo of the late Sengoku Jidai through the early Edo period. Sakakibara Yasumasa (1548–1606) stood as the Tokugawa Clan’s most trusted general and strategist. Alongside three other legendary daimyo, he became known as one of “The Four Guardian Kings” – protectors of the Tokugawa legacy and fierce defenders of unification-era Japan.
This Gashira Class gusoku (samurai armor set) is designed with pride and attention to the legacy of Yasumasa. Crafted with a traditional hachi zunari kabuto (helmet with a bowl shape reminiscent of the human head) and a Byō Tōji Yokohagi Okegawa Dō (rivet-embellished horizontal-lame cuirass), this suit balances battlefield strength with refined elegance. The chest and skirt (kusazari) feature kebiki-odoshi (full lacing), demonstrating the warrior’s rank and the detail of our katchû-shi (Japanese armorers).
This armor is finished in a brown suna (sand texture) lacquer with bold red, white, and blue odoshi (lacing) – symbolizing courage, purity, and loyalty. The tall maedate (crest) crowns the kabuto, marking this armor as one belonging to a samurai of vision and valor. Whether for reenactment, martial arts, cosplay, or display, this suit is a fitting legacy piece.
