Description
Reinforce Your Defense Without Sacrificing Mobility
Waki-Biki Yoroi are auxiliary armor pieces worn beneath the dō (cuirass) to provide additional protection in Feudal Japan. Unlike the primary sangu (armor for the extremities), these protective inserts were developed to shield the vulnerable gap between the dō and armpit when a samurai raised their arms in combat. Initially left open for greater mobility, this area was soon recognized as a critical weak point that needed reinforcement.
To address this, waki-biki yoroi were crafted using kusari (chain armor), karuta (small rectangular or square plates), or kikkō (hexagonal plates), sewn between layers of durable fabric. This tatami yoroi (folding armor) style ensured flexibility while offering essential protection. Traditionally secured with loops or tied in place with cords, the waki-biki was worn beneath the dō, where it stayed firmly in place during combat. Iron Mountain Armory carefully handcrafts these pieces using historically accurate materials, making them ideal for restoration, reenactments, and collectors.
