A Refined Zunari Design from the Final Days of the Sengoku Era

The Akoda-Nari Zunari Bachi Kabuto is a striking evolution of the classic zunari (head-shaped) kabuto, handcrafted as part of Iron Mountain Armory’s Taisho Class – Elite Series of traditional Japanese armor. While structurally identical to the Hineno Zunari, this distinctive version features a sloped central plate, arching subtly inward along the top of the hachi (helmet bowl). This elegant variation became popular in western Japan toward the close of the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period), expressing regional taste without sacrificing battlefield reliability.

Expertly crafted by our senior katchū-shi, the Akoda-Nari Zunari Kabuto is constructed from three individually cut and riveted plates to form the hachi. The hineno-jikoro (shoulder-contoured neck guard) is cut by hand, shaped, and laced with care using your choice of art silk odoshi in odoshi sugake (simple hang) style—a hallmark of high-ranking samurai armor during the late Sengoku period.

The mabisashi (visor) is intentionally left without a crest-mounting post, reflecting historical accuracy. During the Sengoku era, many lower-ranking warriors went without a maedate (helmet crest), as it was both a costly accessory and prone to damage in combat. However, a crest may still be mounted at your request for ceremonial or display purposes.

Clients may customize this kabuto with their preferred mengu (facial armor), including menpō (half-face with nose) or hanbō (lower face). The hanbō was particularly favored in this era, offering adequate protection while maintaining a wide field of vision and unrestricted breathing during prolonged battle.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Elite Series Taisho-Class Craftsmanship: Riveted three-plate construction, hand-finished by our master armorers.

  • Inward-Sloped Center Plate: A stylistic hallmark of late Sengoku kabuto from western Japan.

  • Traditional Hineno-Jikoro: Comfortable, shoulder-fitted shikoro laced with premium art silk odoshi.

  • Includes Deluxe Stand: Ready for proud display or martial presentation.
