Own your own iconic Samurai Battle Hat!

The Ensui Jingasa (conical battle hat) became widely popular among ashigaru (foot soldiers) at the close of the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States period) and continued through the Edo Era. Known for its practicality, this helmet was traditionally used by lower-ranking warriors who fought with valor on the battlefield. It was a defensive piece of armor designed not just to shield the wearer from the harsh elements, but also to protect against attacks, making it a crucial part of ashigaru gear.

Traditionally crafted from materials like wood, leather, nerigawa (lacquered rawhide), and later iron and steel, the Ensui Jingasa was designed to withstand blows from blades and arrows. Its conical shape, while simple in appearance, serves a vital purpose: deflecting strikes away from the wearer’s head, directing force outwards and minimizing damage. Over time, as the ashigaru grew in number and importance on the battlefield, the helmet’s construction evolved, incorporating stronger materials like iron and steel to ensure better protection for soldiers engaged in close combat.

This historically significant helmet is typically black-lacquered, a design chosen for both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. The lacquered surface not only offers protection from the weather but also gives the helmet a sleek, formidable appearance. As was tradition, ashigaru would often have their family or unit mon (family crest) painted in gold on the front of the helmet, which made it easier for commanders to identify their troops at a distance. These mon could be customized based on the wearer’s heritage or affiliation, a distinctive feature of the Ensui Jingasa.

The inside of the helmet is typically lined with hemp cloth, offering comfort for the wearer during extended periods of wear. In historical models, four metal rings were riveted into the interior, and a cord would be passed through these rings, looping around the ears to secure the helmet in place. A second cord, passed through the loops, would tie under the chin, ensuring a secure fit during battle. This design was practical, ensuring that the helmet stayed in place even during vigorous combat, allowing the soldier to focus on the fight.

While the original Ensui Jingasa was built for the foot soldier, this modern recreation maintains the authentic design, offering an incredible balance of protection and comfort. Each helmet is handcrafted with precision, reflecting the skill and dedication of the armorers who crafted these pieces for centuries. For those seeking to add a touch of traditional Japanese armor to their collection or for reenactments, this helmet provides a fantastic representation of samurai-era battle gear.
