Embrace the ingenuity of the warrior with every rapid shot!

The Hayago is a traditional quick loading ammo cartridge used by both samurai and ashigaru in the teppo tai (Japanese matchlock gunners). Following the introduction of the teppo (iron matchlock rifle) by the Portuguese around 1543, visionary Taisho (samurai commanders) recognized the need for a faster reloading solution. Initially, pre-loaded paper or cloth cartridges—lacquered with urushi to waterproof and stiffen—were used, but they were prone to dampness affecting the gunpowder, causing misfires or complete failure to fire. To overcome this, the Hayago, a quick loading tube, was developed to speed up the process.

Crafted from wood or bamboo, the Hayago is a cylindrical cartridge with a small hole at the bottom and a top typically covered with paper, leather, or a wooden topper. A wad of paper or cloth with an iron ball is pressed into the tube, followed by another wad and a carefully measured amount of black powder. Once the top is secured, the cartridge is stored in the hayago doran (ammo box) or tied to a string as part of a bandolier. During use, the teppo tai would open the cartridge, pour the black powder down the tube, and then use a ram-rod to force the ball with its wadding into the barrel—readying the weapon to fire within seconds. Historical accounts suggest that, after weeks of training, these matchlock gunners were capable of firing five effective shots at approaching enemies from 100 yards away.
