The art of strategy behind the curtain!

The Jinmaku (陣幕), also known as gunmaku (軍幕), are traditional military curtains used to establish encampments during the Sengoku (1333–1603) and Edo (1603–1868) eras. These curtains were suspended by poles and stretched around camps, providing privacy, protection from wind, and a secure place for the Daimyo, Taisho, and samurai to sleep. Designed with evenly spaced monomi (eye holes) – typically 9 per panel – they counteracted the wind’s force much like a sail. Their history dates back to the Nara era (710–794) and is mentioned in classic texts like the Konjaku Monogatarishū. During the Muromachi era, the Jinmaku became standardized, with detailed instructions outlined in military manuals such as the Honchō Gunki Kō by Arai Hakuseki.

Iron Mountain Armory offers several standard options for the Jinmaku, crafted from asa (hemp cloth). Each panel stands at 1.83 meters (6′) tall and varies in width from 3.65 meters (12′) to 12 meters (39′). Choose from white, black, or blue options, available in either a single solid color or with three horizontal stripes. You may also customize your curtain with your clan mon or personal symbol, hand-painted at 1, 3, 5, or 7 positions. For Sengoku style, panels feature either 10 (for Daimyo) or 8 (for samurai) tethers. Note that the makukuji (tent poles) are not included. As each Jinmaku is handmade, natural defects or blemishes may be present, adding to its authentic character.
