Description
Honor the Simplicity and Tradition of Samurai Elegance!
The Kamishimo Hitatare (上下 – “upper and lower”) is one of the simplest yet most historically significant styles of traditional Japanese clothing. Unlike the more elaborate Traditional Hitatare, the Kamishimo Hitatare was widely worn by both farmers and samurai alike. Originally regarded as commoners’ clothing and sleeping attire for the warrior and governing elite, this outfit gradually became part of the samurai’s daily wear by the Kamakura era (1192–1333). Over time, it was often worn under samurai armor as a simplified form of yoroi hitatare, blending practicality with tradition.
By the Muromachi era (1336–1573), the Kamishimo Hitatare had become the dominant clothing style for the samurai class. It was frequently paired with the kataginu (sleeveless vest), a distinct garment worn by samurai, daimyo (feudal lords), and bakufu (military government officials), further emphasizing its association with warriors and leadership figures.
Traditional 5-Piece Clothing Set:
The Kamishimo Hitatare consists of the following essential garments:
- Juban (Under Shirt)
- Hakama-Shita (Style 1 Outer Top)
- Kukui Umanori (Traditional Pre-Edo Tied Hakama)
- Kyahan (Leggings)
- Uwa-Obi (Outer Belt)
Customization & Optional Accessories:
To further personalize your Kamishimo Hitatare, Iron Mountain Armory offers a variety of custom options, including:
- Waraji (Straw Sandals)
- Tabi (Traditional Two-Toe Socks)
- Gake-Tabi (Reinforced Traditional Socks)
- Sandogasa (Straw Hat)
- Mino (Rain Cloak)
- Kataginu (Sleeveless Vest)
- Hikitate Eboshi (Traditional Samurai Hat)
Each Hakama-Shita ordered with wide sleeves will include loops and cords, allowing the wearer to tie them up as needed. The Kukui Umanori Tied Hakama included in this set is historically accurate to the Kamakura and Muromachi eras, differing from the later Edo-era hakama, which featured a koshita (backboard) and a different tying method.
The Uwa-Obi (outer belt) should be able to wrap around your waist two to three times for proper wear, so we recommend doubling or tripling your waist circumference when selecting your size.
