Honor the Legacy of the Last Samurai!
The Katsumoto Daimyo Jinbaori is designed in tribute to the legendary Last Samurai, inspired by the fictional character Moritsugu Katsumoto, believed to be based on the historical figure Saigo Takamori. A pivotal leader during the transition from the Edo to Meiji eras, Saigo Takamori played a crucial role in the Meiji Restoration, which led to the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Although initially a supporter of the restoration, he later rebelled against the persecution of the samurai class, ultimately leading the Satsuma Rebellion—the last stand of the samurai in Japanese history. For this, Takamori is remembered as “The Last True Samurai” (not Tom Cruise).
Traditionally worn by Daimyo and high-ranking samurai, the Jinbaori (陣羽織, surcoat) was both a functional and symbolic garment. Worn over armor, it protected samurai from the elements while also serving as a display of status, wealth, and personal aesthetics. Over time, its designs became more intricate, incorporating rich fabrics, elaborate motifs, and personalized family crests (mon).
The Katsumoto Daimyo Jinbaori retains the traditional characteristics of Jinbaori: a sleeveless structure, high open collar, reinforced shoulder panels for a regal stance, and a mid-thigh length for versatility in wear. Historically, these garments were crafted from fine materials such as wool, brocade, cotton, and later silk, signifying the samurai’s prominence both on and off the battlefield. For added protection and durability, we offer the option of kikko (armored plating) on the shoulder sections.
