Classic Scaled Design – Modern Warrior Strength
The Kiritsuke Iyo-zane Samurai Armor is a modern tribute to the classical kozane design of the Muromachi period, where armor was constructed with thousands of individually laced scales. The iyo-zane (wide scale plates) were originally hand-laced together to form a flexible and durable suit of armor. However, as warfare evolved in the late Sengoku era, so did the need for more efficient armor crafting. Thus, the kiritsuke (simulated) iyo-zane was introduced to replicate the appearance of classical armor while drastically reducing crafting time and cost.
This tosei (modern/post-1550) reproduction uses embossed steel plates that simulate individual scale plating along a solid armor sheet. These plates are then laced and assembled into a Ni-mai Dō (two-piece chest armor), joined with a side hinge known as an Okegawa Dō. This style was favored by higher-ranking samurai & their elite retainers who sought the traditional look with the modern durability of steel.
Iron Mountain Armory’s apprentice Katchû-shi have enhanced this suit with upgraded kote (armored sleeves) and haidate (thigh guards) featuring simulated kusari (chainmail) between the plating—providing better mobility and defense. It is full-sized, fully functional, and crafted with both performance and display in mind. This armor delivers the regal look of a high-ranking samurai, priced affordably for today’s Modern Warrior.
