Description
Step into Battle with Protection & Tradition
Kogake are armored footwear worn by samurai to protect their feet in battle. Traditionally, warriors entered combat wearing waraji-gake-tabi (special split-toe socks) and waraji (straw sandals), but as warfare evolved, so did the need for greater foot protection. Over time, kogake were developed, incorporating armored plates into the tabi-style design, allowing them to be securely laced into waraji, transforming them into battle-ready footwear.
As samurai sought improved mobility and protection, kogake evolved with the addition of odoshi (armor lacing), kusari (iron mail), and hinges to increase comfort and flexibility. The armored shoes remained lightweight, ensuring the warrior could move swiftly across the battlefield. Paired with waraji-gake-tabi, these armored tabi not only offered protection but also enhanced comfort during prolonged wear.
