The Sogonari Kabuto (sōgō-nari kabuto, or “haired helmet”) is a bold and expressive masterpiece of the Taisho Class – Elite Series, meticulously handcrafted by the master katchū-shi (Japanese armorers) of Iron Mountain Armory. Popularized during the Momoyama Period (1568–1600), this rare variation of the zunari kabuto was distinguished by its layered hair covering, symbolizing the individual personality and warrior spirit of the samurai who wore it.
The hair served both an aesthetic and psychological purpose—transforming the common zunari style into a fearsome and deeply personal statement of presence on the battlefield. Each sogonari kabuto could vary in the type, length, style, and color of hair, with yak hair being the most traditional. Some samurai even used horse hair, rabbit (usagi) fur, or bear (kuma) fur, either trimmed or brushed, depending on their preference and rank. In rarer cases, full suits of yoroi (armor) were covered in matching fur to complete the untamed visual impact.
