Description
Embrace the sacred legacy of the warrior monks and elevate your spirit!
The sōhei zukin is an exact reproduction of the traditional cloth hood worn by the sōhei (僧兵), the legendary warrior monks of Japan. Formed during the Heian Period (794–1185), these warrior monks took up arms to protect their temples and later evolved into a powerful force during the Sengoku (Warring State) Era, influencing local daimyo, the shogun, and even the emperor. Recognizable by their distinctive white cowls—which symbolize purity and emancipation, though alternative colors denote specific sects—the sōhei were also known as a brotherhood dedicated to spreading Buddhism throughout Japan.
Iron Mountain Armory handcrafts this traditional sōhei zukin after original models from the Sengoku Era. Designed for modern use by monks, samurai reenactors, and film productions alike, this adjustable hood fits any head circumference. Its extra material can be styled in various ways: wrapped under the chin, over the chest, around the neck, or left hanging freely. You can also choose to fold the material over to cover the face partially, or leave it open to reveal the wearer’s features. Some believe that shinobi (ninja) were once warrior monks, a theory that adds further mystique to this versatile accessory.
Our range of samurai clothing and accessories has been featured in numerous movies, TV series, and documentaries, including the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix and the Smithsonian Channel.
