Feel the revolutionary spirit of feudal Japan in your hands!

The Tanegashima Tantutu is a meticulously crafted replica of the historic Japanese matchlock pistol introduced by the Portuguese during the Sengoku Period (~1543). Originally called teppó, it later became known by the name Tanegashima, named after the island governed by the young Tanegashima Tokitaka (1528–1579). In just a few short years, the matchlock technology transformed warfare in Japan, with samurai clans that adopted these firearms gaining a decisive advantage. As production ramped up, Japan eventually became one of the world’s largest producers of matchlocks, playing a crucial role in ending the Sengoku Era and uniting the country under the Edo Period.

Our replica Tanegashima Tantutu is handmade in Japan using traditional materials: a wooden dai (stock), brass jiita (plating), and a zinc alloy tsutsu (barrel). Crafted to look and feel like a genuine matchlock pistol, it meets import regulations as a non-functional replica. While the powder box can be opened, the trigger can be pulled, and the hammer will drop, this pistol is designed solely for decoration and re-enactment, and is shipped as a “movie prop” or display item. It can be modified to fire caps and emit smoke for theatrical effects, though it cannot be made to function as a real firearm.

This replica measures approximately 39 cm for the barrel, 27 cm for the handle, with an overall length of 67 cm and weighs around 2.6 lbs. Each piece is hand assembled and may exhibit minor blemishes, which add to its character and historical authenticity.

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Historical Reproduction: Faithfully replicates the design and appearance of the original Tanegashima Tantutu.
  • Traditional Materials: Constructed with a wooden dai, brass jiita, and zinc alloy tsutsu for an authentic look.
  • Non-Functional Replica: Designed for decoration, re-enactment, and film use only; can be modified to fire caps and emit smoke for theatrical effects.
  • Hand-Assembled: Each unit is carefully assembled by skilled artisans in Japan, ensuring a unique piece with its own character.
