Feel the revolutionary spirit of feudal Japan with your own Samurai matchlock!

The Tanegashima Teppo is a meticulously crafted replica of the historic Japanese matchlock rifle that transformed warfare after its introduction by the Portuguese around 1543. Named after the island of Tanegashima—governed by the young Tanegashima Tokitaka—this rifle, also known as a Hinawaju (fire rope gun) or simply Teppo (steel tube gun), quickly became indispensable. Within just three years of its arrival, Japanese samurai clans embraced the matchlock, forming specialized groups known as teppo tai. By the late 16th century, Japan emerged as one of the world’s leading firearm producers, and the matchlock played a major role in ending the Sengoku Era and ushering in peace.

Our replica is handmade in Japan using traditional materials: a wooden dai (stock), brass jiita (plating), and a zinc alloy tsutsu (barrel). Crafted to look and feel like a real Tanegashima Teppo, it meets import regulations in most countries as a non-functional replica. While the powder box can be opened, the trigger can be pulled and the hammer will drop, this piece is intended solely for decoration, re-enactment, or as a movie prop. It can be modified to fire caps and emit smoke for theatrical effects but will never function as a real rifle.

This replica measures approximately 86 cm for the barrel, 25 cm for the handle, and an overall length of 111 cm, weighing around 4.5 lbs. Each unit is hand assembled and may have minor blemishes, adding to its unique character.

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Historical Reproduction: Faithfully replicates the design and appearance of the original Tanegashima Teppo.
  • Handcrafted Materials: Constructed using wood, brass, and zinc alloy for an authentic look and feel.
  • Non-Functional Replica: Designed for decoration, re-enactment, and film use only.
  • Detailed Craftsmanship: Each rifle is hand assembled, ensuring a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
