Description
Lightweight Defense for Samurai, Ashigaru & Shinobi
The Tatami Karuta Dō (folding cuirass with square plates) is a traditional form of tatami yoroi (folding armor), designed to offer flexibility, mobility, and practical protection during Japan’s late Sengoku and Edo Eras. Worn by ashigaru (foot soldiers), shinobi (ninja), and mid-to-upper-rank samurai, this style of lightweight armor remained a popular choice well into the “peaceful” Tokugawa period.
The word tatami refers to the foldable nature of the armor, while karuta signifies the small square or rectangular plates that are sewn onto asa (hemp linen) backing. These steel plates are arranged with small gaps between them, allowing for exceptional movement while still offering solid defense against slashes and light thrusts. The dō (cuirass) and kusazuri (thigh guards) are both crafted in this traditional form, making it ideal for patrol, travel, or combat where speed and discretion are essential.
This Gashira-class model includes a tate-eri (armored shoulder yoke with kikkō plating) for added neck and shoulder protection, along with kohaze (toggles) on the watagami (shoulder straps) for secure adjustment. Whether worn under a robe by a shinobi or over a kimono by a samurai, the Tatami Karuta Dō remains true to its roots — protective, practical, and always ready for action.
