Description
Enhance Comfort and Protection with Traditional Samurai Armor Craftsmanship
Tate-Eri (tate-yeri or eri-nawashi no eri-dai) is a removable armored collar designed to protect the neck and shoulders of the warrior while making the do (samurai cuirass) more comfortable to wear. The eri-dai (padded shoulder yoke) sits over the shoulders and extends across the upper back, reinforced with kikko (hexagonal armor plates) for additional protection. The tate-eri (raised collar) is also fitted with kikko to shield the throat and neck from both edged and blunt attacks. These plates are sewn between layered materials and backed with cotton padding, ensuring durability and comfort.
This innovative protective feature was commonly tied inside the do and became increasingly popular toward the end of the Sengoku Era and into the Edo Era, replacing the manju-wa (a similar type of under-armor protection). While various designs existed, Iron Mountain Armory has faithfully recreated the most common tate-eri style, as used by samurai of the time.
The Gashira and Taisho class armor sets already include the tate-eri, but this can serve as a replacement or be added to a Kachi do for enhanced protection, comfort, and style.
