Description
Embrace the serene mystique of the Komusō!
The Tengai, also known as the Komusō-gasa, is a traditional woven straw gasa originally worn by the Komusō monks. Designed in the style of an overturned basket with specially crafted eye slits, this hat not only shields the wearer from the sun and dust during long journeys but also completely conceals their identity. For the Komusō, this anonymity was essential, as their distinctive hat helped remove the ego of the wearer and granted them the rare privilege of traveling freely throughout the country under the shogunate’s protection. It is believed that the Komusō served a dual purpose, acting as both spiritual practitioners and covert spies or shinobi (ninja) who gathered vital information from villages and cities.
Our Tengai is meticulously hand-woven in Japan using traditional techniques, ensuring an authentic look and feel. The average dimensions are approximately W12.9 x H13.3 inches (W33 x H34 cm), making it a striking and practical accessory. Please note that due to its size and shipping directly from Japan, the freight cost is high and it will be shipped separately from other items.
