High-Ranking Protection with Timeless Samurai Elegance

The Tetsu Jingasa is a premier example of a high-ranking samurai battle hat, crafted in the traditional style by Iron Mountain Armory’s expert Taisho-class katchū-shi (armor smiths). Known as the “military hat” (jingasa), this piece of armor combines practicality, prestige, and artistry into a single, lightweight yet protective form.

The word jingasa is derived from jin (military) and kasa (hat). While most jingasa were crafted from layers of lacquered paper, leather, or hemp for common soldiers, this Tetsu Jingasa is constructed from tetsu—iron that became synonymous with steel as Japan’s forging methods evolved. Traditionally reserved for upper-ranking samurai and warriors of means, the use of steel and brass in this helmet reflects both its functional superiority and ceremonial refinement.

Handcrafted from high-quality, 0.8 mm laminated steel, the bowl of the jingasa is strong enough to withstand strikes while remaining light enough for mounted use. It features a brass fukurin (rim edging) for added elegance and structural protection, while a brass kanamono modeled after the classic tehen no kanamono (decorative helmet top fitting) adorns the crown. A kasa jirushi no kan (signaling ring) can be added at the back to hold an agemaki (decorative bow), reinforcing the helmet’s status as both armor and symbol.

In keeping with tradition, this Tetsu Jingasa can be finished in black lacquer with the optional engraving of your personal mon (crest) or the emblem of your favorite samurai clan—proudly etched in brass. Like its companion styles—the Ichimonji Gasa, Ensui Jingasa, Mekure Toppai Gata Jingasa, and Gashira Bajo Jingasa—it features four internal loops for the securing cords. These allow the hat to be tied securely below the chin, while a padded interior ensures both comfort and stability.

Whether worn for display, reenactment, or used in martial arts demonstrations, the Tetsu Jingasa stands as a noble expression of the warrior spirit—one that blends historic accuracy with practical performance.
