Waki-Biki Yoroi are auxiliary armor pieces worn beneath the (cuirass) to provide additional protection in Feudal Japan. Unlike the primary sangu (armor for the extremities), these protective inserts were developed to shield the vulnerable gap between the and armpit when a samurai raised their arms in combat. Initially left open for greater mobility, this area was soon recognized as a critical weak point that needed reinforcement.

To address this, waki-biki yoroi were crafted using kusari (chain armor), karuta (small rectangular or square plates), or kikkō (hexagonal plates), sewn between layers of durable fabric. This tatami yoroi (folding armor) style ensured flexibility while offering essential protection. Traditionally secured with loops or tied in place with cords, the waki-biki was worn beneath the , where it stayed firmly in place during combat.
