Description
Battle-Tested Tradition for the Samurai Warrior!
The Yoroi Hitatare is the traditional Tattsuke-Bakama (tapered hakama pants with leggings), Hakama-Shita (kimono-style top), and Juban Shitagi (undershirt) set, historically worn by samurai beneath their armor from the late Heian Period through the Sengoku Era of Japan (1050–1573 A.D.). Specifically designed for comfort and flexibility in battle, the Yoroi Hitatare is an adaptation of the standard Traditional Hitatare, featuring a hakama-shita top with tapered legs and integrated kyahan (leggings) for a secure, battle-ready fit. These modifications made it ideal for wearing under armor, reducing fabric interference and allowing for greater mobility on the battlefield.
Much like the Traditional Hitatare, which was commonly worn without armor, the Yoroi Hitatare provided both functionality and symbolic distinction. Samurai archers would often tuck their right sleeve into their pants to ensure unobstructed movement while drawing their yumi (samurai longbow), demonstrating the practicality of this design.
Although less formal, the Yoroi Hitatare was sometimes worn in official capacities and, in the Edo Era, was occasionally paired with a kataginu (sleeveless vest with exaggerated shoulders) for a more distinguished appearance. The color of the fabric often denoted the rank of the wearer, while brocade patterns were typically reserved for Daimyo, Taisho (generals), or high-ranking retainers. When not in armor, samurai would often switch to the Traditional Hitatare, which varied slightly in design and material. Additionally, samurai commonly paired their Yoroi Hitatare with tabi (socks) or Waraji-Gake (cloth sandal socks).
Iron Mountain Armory meticulously crafts each Yoroi Hitatare for historical accuracy, making it an excellent choice for martial artists, historical reenactors, cosplayers, and collectors seeking to embody the samurai warrior spirit. Our authentic samurai clothing has been featured in the Netflix and Smithsonian Channel docudrama, “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan.”
How to Wear Yoroi Hitatare for Combat & Training:
- Secured at the waist using four himo (straps):
- Two long himo are attached at the front and wrap around the back, tying securely under the front panel.
- Two shorter himo are attached at the rear, looping through the front himo before tying underneath the hakama in the front.
- This traditional tying method ensures that the himo remain hidden and secure, preventing them from being pulled or snagged during combat or martial arts training.
