Channel the Spirit of the Water Buffalo with Balance and Precision

The Zunari Mokusei Horadzundo Kabuto is a formidable yet balanced ceremonial helmet, faithfully reproduced by the Gashira-class katchū-shi (armorers) at Iron Mountain Armory. Inspired by traditional zunari (head-shaped) kabuto, this model is crowned with symmetrical mokusei horadzundo—lightweight wooden horns designed to replicate the impressive strength and presence of the water buffalo.

This style of horned kabuto was not typically worn into battle, but rather reserved for display, ceremonies, processions, and formal entries to and from the capital. The water buffalo horns symbolized raw strength, resilience, and an unwavering spirit—qualities deeply admired by the samurai. The Zunari Mokusei Horadzundo Kabuto channels that same spirit, offering a regal presence ideal for martial artists, collectors, and reenactors.

The horns are mounted on metal posts embedded into the hachi (helmet bowl) and can be removed for martial arts use or ease of transport. When removed, the short posts remain in place, serving as secure mounts for future reattachment. This gives the kabuto dual functionality—ceremonial grandeur and practical versatility for training or wear.

Crafted to replicate the traditional three-plate zunari structure, the hachi is forged from a single piece of steel shaped to appear like a segmented construction. Each shikoro (neck guard plate) is individually cut, hammered, polished, painted, and hand-laced in odoshi sugake (simple hang), with your choice of odoshi (lace) color. The interior is lined with a fitted ukebari (helmet lining) for comfort and authenticity.

You may also select your preferred style of mengu (facial armor) to accompany your kabuto, allowing you to create a personalized and fully armored display or wear-ready ensemble.

Whether used to command presence in ceremony or showcase a proud collection, the Zunari Mokusei Horadzundo Kabuto offers an imposing and authentic tribute to samurai tradition with modern balance and functionality.
