Enhance & Reinforce Your Samurai Armor with Traditional Elegance
Aida kanamono & kiusho kanamono are ornamental support plates traditionally used to embellish and reinforce the dō (cuirass) and sode (shoulder shields) of samurai armor. Also known as hassō-no-kanamono, these decorative plates were crafted from akagane (copper) or sentoku (brass) and were commonly seen on both Edo and Showa-era gusoku (matching armor sets). Their primary purpose was to strengthen the hassō-byō (decorative rivets), while also preventing wear and damage to the urushi (lacquer) on the underlying armor plates.
These plates also played a crucial functional role—due to the natural flexing of the armor during movement or combat, rivets could loosen over time. By absorbing the stress, the hassō-no-kanamono helped extend the durability of the armor while adding a layer of refined decoration.
Each set consists of three plates: one aida kanamono (center piece) and two kiusho kanamono (side pieces). Six byō (rivets) are included to properly secure the plates. This set is ideal for armor restoration, upgrades, or DIY projects for both antique and modern reproductions.
If installing onto an existing dō or sode, the included rivets should be threaded through pre-existing odoshi (lace) holes. If no holes are present, they will need to be carefully drilled for installation.
