Compact Power for the Elite Samurai
The Cochin Kabuto is a rare and ingenious piece of samurai engineering, recreated here in the Taisho Class – Elite Series by Iron Mountain Armory’s master katchū-shi (armorers). This unique kabuto (helmet) belongs to the class of tatami yoroi (folding armor) and was often worn by high-ranking samurai and taishō (generals) during campaigns where portability and protection were equally essential.
The Cochin is a form of hachi kabuto (bowl helmet) built with four concentric steel rings, each carefully forged and nested within one another. These rings are mounted onto a semi-circular base and connected by a rotating support arm. When not in use, the rings collapse flat for compact storage. When raised, they form a dome shape that is locked into place with a toggle, creating a helmet that is both sturdy and travel-ready.
Attached to the bowl is a Hineno-style shikoro (neck guard), consisting of five hand-cut lames, laced with kon-ito sugake odoshi (simple hang using navy blue art silk lace). It features small but elegant fukigaeshi (turnbacks), completing the look of a refined and mobile warrior. This style of kabuto was favored by mobile warlords such as the Takeda Clan, particularly during the Azuchi–Momoyama period, when speed and flexibility in battle were paramount.
Ideal for martial artists, reenactors, and collectors, the Cochin Kabuto blends authentic function with elite craftsmanship—an impressive testament to the adaptability of the samurai class.
