Date Masamune, the “One-Eyed Dragon of Ōshu” (dokuganryū 独眼竜), remains one of Japan’s most revered and legendary Daimyo. Known for his military brilliance, fierce independence, and ambition, Masamune left an indelible legacy that shaped the course of the late Sengoku Era (Warring States) and early Edo Era (Peaceful Unification). His missing eye and distinctive crescent moon maedate (helmet crest) became enduring symbols of determination, strength, and visionary leadership.

The Date Clan preferred the gomai-dō (five-section cuirass), a highly respected armor style based on the yokohagi-okegawa do design with ito-mono (long plate) construction. The gomai-dō allowed for both flexibility and robust protection, essential for the tumultuous battlefield conditions of the time. It became so closely associated with the Date clan that it is often referred to as the Yukinoshita Do, named after the Sendai region they ruled.

At Iron Mountain Armory, our senior katchû-shi (Japanese armor smiths) have painstakingly researched and recreated this historically accurate, Daimyo-class reproduction of Date Masamune’s iconic armor. Every piece is crafted with respect to the original methods, featuring a 32-plate suji-bachi kabuto (multi-ridged helmet) designed to offer unparalleled strength and elegance. Should you prefer, our artisans can also craft your helmet with a different number of ken (plates) or customize the style to suit your personal tastes.

This premium samurai armor is full-sized, fully functional, and constructed to serve either as a commanding display piece or to be proudly worn for ceremonies, reenactments, or martial practice. We offer the ability to custom size your armor and adjust colors, lacing patterns, helmet styles, and crests to create a set that is uniquely yours — a true heirloom piece of living history.

The gomai-dō is known for its sophisticated engineering. Composed of five interconnected plates—front, back, both sides, and a lower back section—the design offers superior flexibility without sacrificing defensive strength. This structure allowed warriors to move freely and maintain their balance during prolonged battles, offering an edge that only the elite could afford. A perfect fusion of protection, style, and prestige, the gomai-dō was favored by the most distinguished samurai and Daimyo across Japan.

At Iron Mountain Armory, we believe that every modern warrior who dons the Date Masamune Samurai Armor should feel the unwavering spirit of the “One-Eyed Dragon” awakening within. It is not just armor—it is a legacy reborn.
