Practical Protection from the Sengoku Battlefield

The Hanbo (半頬) is a style of mengu (facial armor) designed to cover the chin and lower cheeks, first emerging during the Nanboku-chō period (1336–1392). It replaced earlier forms such as the happuri (open-face mask) and eventually evolved into the hoate and menoshita-bô (later known as menpo). Historically, the hanbo gained prominence during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), frequently combined with a nodowa or tate for additional throat protection.

Although full-face mengu became more common toward the end of the Muromachi period, the hanbo remained popular for its practicality. By covering only the lower face, it provided sufficient protection without impeding vision or breathing—key advantages during fast-paced combat.

Traditionally, mengu served a dual purpose on the battlefield. Aside from protection, they helped secure the kabuto (helmet) cords and protected the wearer’s face from abrasions caused by the shinobi-no-o (helmet rope). Hanbo typically featured ore kugi (L-shaped posts) on the cheeks to secure these cords, ensuring stability during battle.

The Hanbo crafted by Iron Mountain Armory is an exact replica of a historical model from the late Sengoku era (1467–1615). Our expert samurai armorers take pride in customizing your hanbo with your choice of finishes. This mengu is full-sized, functional, and designed to perfectly complement any kabuto or serve as a standalone display piece on our Menpo Display Stand. Ideal for martial arts training, reenactments, cosplay, LARP, or historical productions.
