Description
Inspired by the Fierce Loyalty and Fearsome Legacy of Ii Naomasa
The Ii Clan Zunari Hachi Kabuto is a commanding and historically rich reproduction of the fearsome helmet worn by Ii Naomasa (井伊 直政), one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s most trusted and legendary generals during the Sengoku period. Crafted by the skilled Gashira-class katchū-shi (armorers) at Iron Mountain Armory, this striking zunari kabuto honors the legacy of the so-called “Red Devils” (Akaoni) of the Ii Clan—elite warriors known for their unshakable loyalty, discipline, and ferocity in battle.
This modern gendai kabuto is press-formed to simulate the traditional three-plate zunari (head-shaped) construction of the hachi (bowl). The design features a prominent oroshi-mabizashi (visor) sculpted with mayu (simulated eyebrows) and miage shiwa (simulated forehead wrinkles)—a signature aesthetic of traditional zunari kabuto believed to embody fierce determination.
Crowning this helmet are its most iconic feature: large, gold-painted waki-date (side crests) shaped like water buffalo horns—crafted from lightweight wood and finished in a brilliant metallic hue. These horns were famously worn by Ii Naomasa, symbolizing strength, courage, and an unwavering warrior spirit that reached to the heavens.
Though the Ii Clan is best known for their crimson (shu) lacquered yoroi paired with indigo blue odoshi (lacing), Iron Mountain Armory offers this kabuto with your choice of traditional or custom paint finishes and odoshi colors. The shikoro (neck guard) is hand-cut, shaped, and laced in odoshi sugake (simple hang) for both flexibility and elegance. The interior is completed with a carefully installed ukebari (helmet lining), ensuring structure and wearability.
The included mengu is a traditional hanbō (lower face armor), paired with a matching tare (throat guard) laced in the same style for continuity. Whether used for martial display, reenactment, or as a centerpiece for a samurai armor collection, the Ii Clan Zunari Hachi Kabuto embodies the striking presence of one of Japan’s most iconic warrior clans.
Also available in Taisho Class for those seeking a higher level of traditional craftsmanship.
