Feel the Comfort and Honor of Samurai Tradition!

The Juban Shitagi is an authentic, traditional Japanese shirt designed specifically to be worn beneath the kimono. Originating during Japan’s legendary Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period), this garment played an integral role in the daily lives of samurai warriors. Its primary purpose was multifaceted—keeping warriors cool and comfortable, protecting outer garments from perspiration, and offering a versatile option suitable for casual home wear or sleep.

In the notoriously hot and humid summers of historical Japan, samurai frequently changed their juban shitagi during the midday heat. This practical custom maintained their freshness and preserved the pristine condition of their elaborate outer kimonos, highlighting the garment’s critical role in both personal hygiene and wardrobe longevity.

Today, the Juban Shitagi remains relevant for martial artists and samurai enthusiasts alike. It is perfect to wear beneath your iaido gi (sword practice uniform), kendo gi (Japanese fencing attire), or even as a standalone lightweight training top. Its breathability also makes it ideal for traditional casual wear, especially during warmer weather or humid evenings. Whether you are training, engaging in cosplay, historical reenactment, or simply embracing traditional samurai fashion, our Juban Shitagi is crafted with authenticity and comfort in mind.

Our handcrafted shirts are available in historically accurate materials, allowing you to choose an era-specific fabric:

  • Edo Era: Crafted from 100% quality cotton for superior softness, comfort, and luxury—reflecting European influence.
  • Sengoku Era: Crafted from 100% authentic hemp linen, known for its strength, durability, and historically accurate appearance.

Iron Mountain Armory proudly offers the Juban Shitagi in two distinctive sleeve styles:

  • Narrow Sleeve: Traditional cut, streamlined for practicality.
  • Kosode (Wide Sleeve): Enhanced with urakumi (armpit openings), promoting ventilation and allowing the sleeves to comfortably wrap around your arms beneath armor, offering additional protection.

Customize your Juban Shitagi with sizing options tailored specifically to you:

  • Traditional juban typically reach hip-level, approximately 20 cm below the waist.
  • Fully customizable measurements available for a personalized fit and added comfort.

Our traditional samurai clothing and accessories have gained international recognition, featured prominently in films, TV series, and historical documentaries—including Netflix and Smithsonian Channel’s renowned docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan.”

Liked the quality but the length of the arms and wideness were incorrectly sent based of the receipt, because the order took two months to deliver returning seemed inconvenient, for some reason this review doesn’t have the option comment on the other shintagi I ordered but it also had the same issue. The print came out nice but there was no way to know what it would look like in the store, example pictures would have been appreciated to show what the different placement options would have looked like

    • Thank you for your comment and review. As noted on the top of every page, including the view cart and order page there is roughly a 2 week delay in order processing due to back orders and pandemic issues. This is in addition to the stated 2 to 4 weeks for crafting time (more towards 4 weeks if a mon is selected to be printed). The images of the mon (front / back) should be shown when clicking the ? next to the option or when cycling through the product images. We always ask that if you have any questions, doubts or concerns, to please ask us before placing your order so we may address them, insuring that you know exactly what you are ordering and are not surprised.

If there was an error with your order, please let us know so we may have a chance to resolve the issue.

Ordered narrow sleeve style, it was made incorrectly, sleeves looked like it was the wider sleeves just sewn partially inward toward the armpit in an attempt to make the narrow sleeve style I ordered.

    • Japanese clothing might seem odd to European. All clothing have been made from traditional patterns with review of original clothing, from the 16 ~ 17 century. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask us and we can provide you with specific references.

  3. Very comfortable material. Looks legit.

  4. The material and construction are top notch, I made a few mistakes with my measurements as the sleeves were too long but that is entirely on me and easily fixed myself. One note to anyone wanting to customize this to act as an outer kosode instead of an undershirt, be aware there are ties on this that aren’t pictured, next time I order one I will ask if the ties can be left off.
