Embrace the art of tradition and secure your stride with timeless elegance!

Kyahan are traditional leggings or “gaiters” designed to hold your hakama securely around your shins or provide extra padding under your suneate (shin armor). In ancient times, these gaiters were worn by samurai and common travelers alike to protect their clothing from snagging on underbrush and getting dirty on the road. Traditionally made from asa (hemp or cotton linen) with two himo (lace ties) at the top and bottom, the kyahan are tied from the side or back when worn with suneate, and from the front when worn alone. They are also a popular accessory for those wearing traditional hakama or samurai hitatare, as they enhance comfort and functionality.

Iron Mountain Armory crafts these sturdy yet simple kyahan entirely by hand, using strong linen materials reminiscent of those used during the late Sengoku to mid Edo era. While the traditional version is made from hemp linen, we also offer a silk brocade option that became common in the Edo Era. Sold as a set, our kyahan come in standard sizes or can be custom sized to ensure a perfect, traditional fit. They are an ideal choice not only for modern martial artists, reenactors, cosplayers, LARPers, and SCA enthusiasts but also for hikers and travelers seeking to protect their shins while wearing hakama or even shorts.
