Crafted from various materials—such as brass, wood, and paper—these crests have been an integral part of samurai armor since they were first introduced to the evolving tanko style in the 9th century Heian Period (also known as maedate-mono). Over the centuries, the maedate became increasingly ornate, particularly by the 18th century Edo Period, when they evolved into flamboyant decorative pieces that, while impractical for battle, now serve as treasured display items on walls or over entryways.

• Simple Brass Crests – Standard brass crests, usually with more simple designs, cut by hand from thin brass sheets.
• Carved Brass Crests – More intricately designed and bigger brass crests, carved from thicker brass.
• Cast Brass Crests – Crests that are cast from wax molds, often of dragons, demons and other intricate designs.
• Wooden Crests – Carved and painted wooden crests. (WC Classifications)
