Ride with Elegance, Hunt with Honor, Live the Samurai Way!
The Mukabaki 行縢, also known as Natsukage Mukabaki or samurai “chaps,” are traditionally crafted leg coverings that trace their origins back to Japan’s renowned Kamakura Period (1192–1333). Historically, samurai warriors greatly favored these chaps, specifically crafted from the summer skins of Japanese sika deer. Known for their distinctive soft brown fur and vibrant white spots, these deer skins were not only visually striking but also extremely durable and easy to maintain.
Initially developed to protect samurai while riding horses through dense forests and rugged terrains during hunting excursions or military campaigns, the Mukabaki provided both essential protection and stylish sophistication. They were designed to cover the front of the legs, shielding the warrior from brush, branches, and other hazards encountered while riding or engaged in battle.
With their historical significance, the Mukabaki have become iconic in the traditional Japanese martial art of Yabusame (horseback archery). This discipline, also known as “Yabaseuma,” involves archers skillfully shooting arrows (kabura-ya) while galloping at full speed. Yabusame practitioners don the traditional Mukabaki as part of their formal ceremonial attire called ageshozoku, marking it not only as practical wear but also as symbolic ceremonial dress reflecting honor, precision, and discipline.
Today, Iron Mountain Armory expertly crafts our Mukabaki using synthetic fur designed to replicate the beautiful appearance and practical durability of authentic sika deer skin. Adjustable straps and cords allow the wearer to comfortably secure these chaps, fitting most individuals regardless of their height or build. They can easily be adjusted for length and secured firmly at the waist, providing optimal comfort and a tailored appearance suitable for martial artists, historical reenactors, cosplayers, and anyone looking to authentically embody samurai style.
