Featuring an impressive “O” (large) Tengu nose, detailed facial wrinkles (shiwa), attachment posts (odayori ore kugi), detachable nose guard (hana), ear covers (mimi), and a throat guard (tare), this full-faced armor captures the powerful essence of Japan’s legendary Tengu.

In Japanese folklore, Tengu were mythical avian-human beings from mountain peaks, revered for their supernatural powers and feared for their fierce appearance. Samurai warriors adopted Tengu imagery to channel their strength, intimidate enemies, and inspire bravery and courage on the battlefield. Wearing this distinctive menpo, samurai believed they could embody the Tengu’s legendary prowess and dominate in combat.

Historically, menpo provided essential protection and securely held the shinobi-no-o (helmet cords) of the kabuto (helmet), preventing chafing and enhancing stability during battle.
