Command the Battlefield – Embrace the Ancient Legacy
The O-Yoroi (Great Armor) is among the most iconic and revered samurai armor designs of feudal Japan. Worn between the 11th and early 14th centuries, it rose to prominence during the Genpei War. Featuring a distinctive boxed dō (cuirass), the armor enclosed the torso in a “U” shape and fastened with a waidate (side plate) under the right arm, providing formidable protection for mounted samurai archers.
This prestigious suit was reserved for wealthy daimyō (feudal lords) and high-ranking generals, as its intricate construction required nearly a year to complete and cost the equivalent of a samurai commander’s yearly salary—around $55,000 USD in modern value. Every detail, from materials to colors, symbolized clan affiliation and social status.
Constructed using hon kozane (individual iron or leather scale plates), each plate was coated in clay, lacquered with urushi, and then hand-laced with odoshi (braid) in silk, cotton, or hemp. The result: an exceptionally strong yet flexible suit that served its wearer with elegance and durability.
The O-Yoroi was purpose-built for mounted archers. The box-like structure supported its weight on the saddle, while the curved chest allowed for easy yumi (bow) drawing. A strip of leather called tsuru bashiri gawa prevented the bowstring from catching on the ridges of the armor. Additional features like the sendan-no-ita and kyubi-no-ita (armpit protectors) enabled a full draw of the bow while maintaining defense.
Despite its excellence, the O-Yoroi’s rigidity made it less suited for infantry combat. Following the Mongol invasions of 1274, more versatile armor designs emerged. By the 14th century, the O-Yoroi saw reduced battlefield use but returned to popularity in the Edo period as a ceremonial symbol of the samurai spirit, often donated to shrines or used in rituals honoring ancestors.
